Police sergeant faces murder charge after fatal shooting of relative
A Sekhukhune District police sergeant is expected to reappear in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court following the fatal shooting of her 31-year-old brother-in-law.
Salome Kgoroba (49), a police sergeant attached to the SAPS in Sekhukhune District, is expected to reappear in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court for a formal bail application tomorrow (November 21).
Kgoroba made her first appearance on November 17, facing a murder charge.
She was arrested following the fatal shooting of her 31-year-old brother-in-law, whose name has not been revealed yet, at her residence in Groblersdal on November 16 at about 02:00.
Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said preliminary investigations indicated that Kgoroba was asleep when she heard someone opening the door and believed it was an intruder.
Ledwaba said Kgoroba reportedly fired her gun towards the door and discovered afterwards that she had shot her brother-in-law. He was immediately transported to the local hospital.
Her brother-in-law was later transferred to Philadelphia Hospital in Dennilton, where he succumbed to his injuries.
“A case of murder was opened, and an investigation led to the identification of the suspect as a police officer. She was traced and arrested. Her state-issued firearm was confiscated for further forensic analysis,” Ledwaba explained.
Ledwaba stated that the matter has been transferred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further investigation.
IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping said IPID is investigating the case, the crime scene has been reconstructed, and the postmortem has also been completed.
