Man arrested after brutal rape of 95-year-old gogo

A man will make his first appearance in the Nebo Magistrate’s Court today, after allegedly raping an elderly woman in Vleeisboom last Friday.

A 30-year-old man who allegedly raped a 95-year-old elderly woman in Vleeisboom Village on Friday night is expected to make his first appearance in the Nebo Magistrate’s Court today.

Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the woman knows the suspect.

Mashaba stated that the man, armed with a knife, accosted the woman while she was preparing food in her home at about 22:00 that night.
“The suspect allegedly assaulted the elderly woman, and gagged and raped her before fleeing the scene,” Mashaba explained.

A case of rape was immediately opened at SAPS Hlogotlou, and the police traced and arrested the man on Saturday evening.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major Jan Scheepers highlighted that the arrest demonstrates an unwavering commitment from the police to bring perpetrators of gender-based violence to justice, particularly those who prey on vulnerable community members.

“The brutality displayed against the 95-year-old woman is utterly reprehensible and will not be tolerated in our province. I commend the investigating team for their swift action in apprehending the suspect. We will ensure that this case receives the attention it deserves as it proceeds through the criminal justice system,” Scheepers remarked.
