A 30-year-old man who allegedly raped his 94-year-old relative in Vleeschboom Village briefly appeared before the Nebo Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges of rape and theft.
Mashudu Malabi-Dzangi, NPA Limpopo Regional spokesperson, said the matter has been postponed to January 22 for a formal bail application while the accused remains in custody.
The man reportedly stole the victim’s cellphone and R100 following the alleged rape. He was found in possession of the cellphone during his arrest.
Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said it is alleged that the suspect, armed with a knife, attacked the senior citizen in her home while she was preparing food on January 9.
The man allegedly assaulted the woman, gagged her, and then raped her.
“A case of rape was immediately opened at SAPS Hlogotlou, and investigations commenced. Through diligent investigative work, the police traced and arrested the suspect on January 10,” Mashaba explained.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers commended the investigating team for their swift action in apprehending the suspect.
Scheepers assured that the police will give the case the attention it deserves as it proceeds through the criminal justice system.
