Mayor meets contractors and consulting engineers

Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality Mayor met with contractors and consulting engineers to discuss poor performance on infrastructure projects and a lack of commitment.

Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality Mayor Eddie Maila stressed that contractors’ poor performance on infrastructure projects and lack of commitment will not be tolerated.

Maila reiterated this during an engagement session last Thursday with contractors and consulting engineers.

The gathering forms part of the municipality’s ongoing monitoring of infrastructure projects.

Mahlako Komane, municipal spokesperson, said the meeting primarily allowed contractors and consulting engineers to present detailed progress reports on the projects that are underway, and further outline challenges and provide timelines for completion.

Concerns were raised regarding the slow progress reported on some projects, including the Dresten Internal Roads project.

Measures are in place to address the identified shortcomings related to the development, and construction work will commence accordingly.

Maila sternly warned that the municipality will not hesitate to terminate contracts where necessary.

“The money budgeted for these projects is still available, and there is no justification for the delays caused by poor performance. Communities deserve timely delivery of quality infrastructure,” he added.

The meeting further discussed the significance of contractors’ timely payment of SMMEs and labourers.

He urged contractors to honour their contractual obligations to subcontractors and workers, and affirmed that the municipality has measures in place to ensure compliance and will closely monitor adherence to the obligations.

Maila pointed out that as a municipality dependent on time-bound conditional grants for infrastructure development, the institution cannot afford delays that may result in the withdrawal of allocated funds.

Komane concluded, “Based on the reports presented, the municipality indicated that, overall, it is satisfied with the progress of projects underway.”
