Illegal overtaking blamed for R579 crash

R579 accident: Emergency services rushed to the scene and transported the seriously injured passengers to hospital.

Three vehicles, which were allegedly illegally overtaking on a barrier line, crashed this morning, sending seven people to the hospital with serious injuries.

Six farm workers, who were sitting on the back of a small truck and on their way to work, suffered severe head and back trauma after the truck overturned on the R579 between the Leeuwfontein intersection and the new Viva fuel station.

24 Seven Logistics’ Derrick Maidment said a Toyota Yaris was also involved in the accident, and one passenger was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment.

Emergency services quickly responded to the scene and transported all the other injured people to Groblersdal Hospital and Philadelphia Hospital.

Maidment explained that the truck overturned after the Toyota Yaris bumped it while they were both overtaking.

A white Mahindra bakkie was also involved in the crash after attempting to overtake.

Maidment thanked all the emergency services that responded swiftly and transported the injured passengers to various hospitals.

He further cautioned passengers against riding on the back of trucks and bakkies, especially farm workers.
