Get ready: What to expect from Lamborghini’s Aventador successor

Confirmed is a hybrid V12 with 746 kW, all-wheel-drive and a brand-new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with no fixed reverse gear.

Having provided a series of teaser images earlier this month, Lamborghini will officially debut its replacement for the Aventador on Wednesday (29 March).

So far only known by its internal moniker, LB744, the Raging Bull’s first ever plug-in hybrid has a lot riding on it for a number of reasons. Carmag.co.za previews what is known is so far.

Proper Lambo

With up to 13 different driving modes, including an all-wheel-drive electric mode, the LB744 is set to push the boundaries of what’s possible on the road.

The Citta Hybrid mode is designed for zero-emissions driving and maximum comfort, while the Sport Recharge mode takes things up a notch with lightning-fast battery charging. But it’s not just the driving modes that have us drooling.

In a recent video released by Lamborghini detailing some of the driving modes, we got a glimpse of the interior and it is a thing of beauty.

The carbon dashboard and steering wheel trimmed in Alcantara add a touch of luxury, while the vertical touchscreen infotainment system and carbon fibre digital instrument cluster are a sight to behold.

Let’s not forget the separate display on the passenger side, which is sure to impress even the most jaded of passengers.

Hybrid V12

Just as a reminder, the LB744 is powered by a hybrid powertrain that’s as innovative as it is powerful. The newly developed mid-mounted 6.5-litre V12 is the lightest and most powerful 12-cylinder engine ever built by Lamborghini, and it’s paired with not one, not two, but three electric motors.

One of these motors is attached to the double-clutch eight-speed transmission, while the other two are fixed to the front axle, supplying traction to each of the front wheels.

The result? A combined power output of 746 kW and 1000 Nm of torque. That’s enough to make even the most seasoned of drivers weak at the knees.

However, as the automotive industry continues to shift towards hybrid and electric powertrains, the introduction of the hybrid Aventador successor by Lamborghini is certainly a bold move.

Classic one day?

However, it begs the question of what will become of the older pure V12 and V10 models that have been the backbone of the brand for years.

Speculation runs rampant as to whether the prices of these classic Lambos will remain stagnant or skyrocket in the coming years. Some believe that the prices will stay the same since these models lack the added power of hybrid technology.

However, the other faction believes that these pure-engine models will become highly sought-after collector’s items in the near future, with prices expected to reach unprecedented heights due to their rarity and the prestige.

As the market continues to shift towards eco-friendly powertrains, it remains to be seen how the value of classic Lamborghini models like the Aventador will be affected. Will they retain their value and remain coveted by car enthusiasts, or will they become relics of a bygone era?

Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, the introduction of the hybrid Aventador successor is a bold step for Lamborghini, and it will be interesting to see how it affects the brand in the coming years.
