Malmesbury teen linked to violent online network ‘764’ fit to stand trial

A psychiatric report has found a Western Cape teenager accused of violent online offences free of mental illness ahead of a planned bail hearing.

Following a month-long admission to Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital, a teenager facing multiple charges has been found fit to stand trial.

The 16-year-old appeared in the Malmesbury Magistrate’s Court today (October 5), where he faces 15 charges.

These include sexual grooming of a child, compelled sexual assault and sexual exploitation of a child, creation of child pornography, exposure or displaying pornography to a child by image, unlawful and intentional distribution of child pornography, possession of child pornography, cruelty to animals and offences relating to a data message that incites damage to property or violence.

Assessment findings

Western Cape NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila explained that the court appearance was for feedback on the assessment and the finalisation of observations.

“He was booked into the hospital for a 30-day observation and the medical report indicates that he does not have any mental illness and has no intellectual disability.”

Ntabazalila added that the boy was found to be fit to stand trial and to follow the proceedings.

Caxton Network News previously reported that the teenager was arrested on August 17 after an investigation by the SAPS National Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations team, with support from several SAPS units and US law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations.

 Violent network

The teenager is suspected to have links to the ‘764’ online network. The network is associated with child exploitation and reportedly targets and coerces minors into online sexual abuse, animal cruelty and other violent criminal activities.

The matter was adjourned to next Thursday (October 15) for a bail application.
