Video: Patients safe after Tembisa Hospital emergency unit fire

A fire at Tembisa Hospital's emergency unit has been contained, with no injuries reported. The hospital remains on divert while investigations continue.

A fire that broke out shortly before 17:00 at Tembisa Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit has been contained. Kempton Express reports that emergency services, including Disaster and Emergency Management Services, were on the scene last night.

“All patients have been accounted for. There is still dense smoke moving in the direction of Zamokuhle Hospital,” Eric Maloka from the City’s disaster and emergency services said last night.

Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba confirmed that the fire was limited to the accident and emergency unit and did not spread to other parts of the hospital.

“It is important to assure the public and families whose loved ones are receiving treatment at the hospital that the fire only affected the accident and emergency unit and not other wards,” said Modiba.

He added that Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital is not receiving new patients at this time and will remain on divert until further notice. A post on the hospital’s Facebook page noted that members of the public can contact 011 923 2000 to enquire about their loved ones.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
