Monument receives donation of historic painting
Daughter of late artist donates painting of inauguration of the Voortrekker Monument.
The Heritage Foundation at the Voortrekker Monument in Groenkloof has received a rare donation of an artwork representing the inauguration of the monument on 16 December 1949.
The painting shows a man and a woman looking at the Voortrekker monument, standing from a distance.
The painting was donated by Ingeborg Schulz, who is the daughter of the late artist, Erich R Schulz.
Erich Schulz owned a bakery in Sunnyside. In his spare time, he enjoyed being a painter.
Ingeborg thought the monument would be the best place for her father’s work.
“What else is going to become of it? My father loved the monument and he would have liked it if it were preserved here,” said Ingeborg.
Communications manager of the monument Gerhard Pretorius said that they were happy with the donation.
“At this stage, an appraisal of the painting has not been done yet, so this is of cardinal historic value for us,” said Pretorius.
Museum curator Petra Luus said that the museum often received requests to accept donations from various organisations or groups. The painting, however, was a first of its kind because it was about the inauguration and donated by a private person.
“It shows you what value art offers to history,” said Luus.
The painting is part of the museum’s private collection and will not be on display to the public.
