Avicii’s Wake Me Up makes UK chart history

Avicii's hit tune 'Wake Me Up' has become the 140th song to cross the one million sales mark in the UK.

Avicii’s Wake Me Up has become one of the UK’s biggest selling singles of all time.

The Swedish star’s chart-topping tune has sold over one million copies, making it only the 140th track in British chart history to break through the milestone sales mark.

It is the third song this year to reach the figure, after Daft Punk’s Get Lucky and Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines, according to the Official Charts Company.

Wake Me Up also remains the fastest-selling single of 2013 so far in the UK, with 267,000 copies snapped up during its first week on sale in July.

Producer and DJ Avicii said at the time: ”Having the fastest-selling record of 2013 is obviously a huge deal to me. I never thought being on the Official Chart was an option for my music. Dance music has its own things; we have our own charts and lists, so just having a Number One is insane!”

Meanwhile, Snow Patrol’s power ballad ‘Chasing Cars’ has also achieved sales of over one million – seven years after it was first released.

Sir Elton John’s double A-side ‘Something About The Way You Look Tonight / Candle In The Wind ’97’ is still the UK’s biggest selling single of all-time, shifting nearly 5 million copies since its release sixteen years ago.
