Covid-19 update: SA records 479 deaths and 13,652 new cases

South Africa topped 13,000 Covid-19 cases in a 24-hour cycle for the third day in a row, after recording 13, 652 new cases on Friday.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases, a division responsible for the surveillance and monitoring of Covid-19, said that a further 479 deaths were reported by the national department of health, bringing the accumulative number of fatalities to 74 352.

The cumulative number of confirmed laboratory cases now stands at 2 511 178 with a 21.7% positivity rate in the past 24-hours.

The institute said that 15 156 101 tests have been conducted in both public and private sectors.

Gauteng ramps up weekend vaccination sites

The number of vaccination sites operational on weekends in Gauteng will be expanded from 16 to 26, the Gauteng provincial government said on Friday.

This will be with immediate effect from the weekend of 7-8 August.

The provincial government said that this was done to assist those who are working during the week and only have the time to vaccinate on weekends.

It said that the expansion will cover all districts and reiterated that walk-ins were allowed whether people are registered or not on the EVDS.
