Fish and frogs also protected, says horrified NSPCA after men eat live animals in video

Some have argued there is nothing wrong with eating insects.

The National Council of Societies for the of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) was left horrified after Raw Egg Challenge participants seemed to have taken it a bit far.

The lockdown has left South Africans using social media to keep themselves entertained with challenges of all kinds.

The pillowcase and cameltoe challenges hit social media before the raw egg challenge, which has drawn criticism from officials.

The NSCPA said it had received video footage of three South Africans eating live animals as part of an extension of the raw egg challenge in the past 24 hours.

It said in a statement: “We are disgusted that live animals have become the centre of barbaric entertainment at a time where compassion is so desperately needed. We urge South Africa to act responsibly, to protect the vulnerable, and, most of all, to be kind – no matter the creature.

“We remind the public that cruelty to animals is a criminal offence. All animals are protected by the Animal Protection Act, this includes fish and frogs.”

The statement divided social media opinion, with some arguing it was unwarranted.

Nell Spaumer said: “Yall don’t carry on like this when they slaughtering cattle or sheep on the beaches or in a residential area…. It was insects. If they ate a cat I’d say yea that’s cruel. Bigger problems out there. Plus half of you guys would use doom to get rid of these very same things if you saw it creeping in your home,” while Kami Joy De Valence argued: “This challenge is for raising money for the needy! Why make it into something disgusting seriously what is wrong with some humans.”

Others argued some of the “animals” being eaten in the videos were insects, which was part of a normal diet for some people.
