Metro cops ‘laugh’ when confronted for parking in disabled bay

By CNS Reporter

A photo of a metro police vehicle parked in a disabled parking spot at a petrol station on Malibongwe Drive in Johannesburg has been circulating on social media.

The photos, posted by Bridget van Oerle on July 8, even got a reaction from MMC for environment and infrastructure development Nico de Jager, Rosebank Killarney Gazette reports.

De Jager said: “Stupidity is not a disability. My colleague will deal with them,” possibly referring to public safety MMC Michael Sun.

Van Oerle said when she confronted the two policewomen, they laughed.

“When I said it was illegal and I would report them, they rudely said they know it’s private property so they can do what they like. These are people who are supposed to uphold the law.”

Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said police officers may not deliberately park their vehicles in a disabled parking bay. They can park there only of it is in the execution of their duty, he said.

“There will be an investigation, and due disciplinary processes will follow.”

Van Oerle later commented she believed residents needed to be good civil servants and report issues. “Officials should know we are watching.”
