Meet Dr Simon Dlamini, a one-in-a-million principal
Despite qualifications that could have led to a lucrative career, this man chose a more noble path.
Dr Simon Dlamini a principal with a PhD in Educational Psychology and has an MBA
Born 58 years ago, Dr Simon Dlamini is a PhD holder in Educational Psychology and has an MBA, but opted to head Ogwini Comprehensive Tech High School in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, instead of making a fortune in the private sector or at a tertiary institution.
“My PhD made me understand more on human behaviour and same applies to my MBA, which is also relevant to my field now, making me more equipped with knowledge on how to handle school children and their behaviour. I’m able to discipline learners easily out of everyday practice and my skills obtained at university,” Dr Dlamini said.
“I have a staff member of about 121 tutors and 3 357 learners, thus a huge number, and my principle to tutors is teaching the essence of education that is relevant to the curriculum and the economy of the country, which is key. I am a nationalist and not a factionalist, and I value education as per constitution of the country. With this, the school has excelled with excellent results.”
Dr Dlamini said as a child, he used to play football, and club managers would give him temporary jobs in their companies to make a living.

“In 1993/4, I was made a pool administrator though l had already started teaching in 1985. I then went to KZN athletics. In 1996, I was with the executive board of Athletics SA, and was made vice-president for two terms. I later became the chairperson of the finance committee of South Africa.”
He added: “During the Mokgadi Caster Semenya saga, l was a board member and one of the expelled ones as l stood ground on her ordeal, which, however, l was happy as the standpoint was vindicated.”
“Being a board member in the corporate governance made me acquire great skills that l am using to date to run this high school.”
Knowing that behind every successful man there is a great woman, Dr Dlamini told The Citizen he is a proud father of seven children, and has been married to Ntombifuthi Carole Dlamini since 1989.
Dr Dlamini’s advice to highly educated skilled people in his field out there is: “People should serve the nation, as we know behavior in our schools need to be tackled at all means using the experience we gain.”
