Racing feast comes to Kyalami

Championship racing will return to the Kyalami circuit next Saturday, May 24.


The occasion will be round three of this year’s Extreme Festival, with a wide variety of on-circuit and non-circuit activities awaiting spectators.

Heading up the show on tarmac will be two races for G&H Transport Extreme Supercars, with 30 vehicles to face the starter.

Fighting for overall victories should be Charl Arangies (Motul Dodge Viper V10), Deon du Plessis (BPT KTM X-Bow), André van der Merwe (Evapco Porsche RSR), Jonathan du Toit (TAR Ferrari 430), Nicky Dicks (Curvent Porsche Cup), Oliver Dalais (Marlboro Crane Porsche GT1), Craig Jarvis (Panacea Porsche GT3), Willem van der Westhuizen (C3 Engineers Ferrari 360) and Anton Cronje (AF Hydraulics Subaru WRX).

The midfield battle should be equally intense, boasting names like Christo Lotter (Exceed Gear Porsche 966), Jacques Viljoen (C3 Engineers Porsche RSR), Gianni Giannoccaro (G&H Transport BMW CSLGT), George Avvakoumides (Ocean Basket Porsche RSR), André Bezuidenhout (Porsche Martini), Mark du Toit (TAR Audi S4), Lee Thompson (Imperial VW Polo), Graeme Nathan (Golf GTI), George Smalberger (Shield Golf GTI) and Adam Starostecki (G&H Transport Mazda MX5).

Favourite to win the Goldwagen Northern Bolt SuperHatch races will be Hilton van Nieuwenhuizen (ASAP Peugeot 207), with his closest adversaries Brett Garland (Jonnesway Honda Civic), Geoff Tugwell (Tugwell Tooling Golf), Robyn Kruger (Steamsure VW Polo), Mark du Tout (TAR Honda Civic) and Jacques Joubert (SPAR Peugeot 206).

Ishmael Baloyi (TAR Honda Civic) should lead Class B, with Jono Konig (Northern Bolt Peugeot 206), Nic Martin (REX Diff Opel Kadett), Louise Joubert (SPAR Ford Fiesta), James Fuller (New Age Tyre Golf) and Shaun Besterman (VW Golf) on his heels.

The Hankook Formula Vee category should see brilliant dicing at the front, with current title leader Jaco Schriks (Lasersprint Rhema) facing off against veterans Alan Holm (Office Direct Rhema) and Peter Hills (Renexcon Rhema).

Also in the run for top podium places should be Greg Wilson (Reflex Solutions Forza ZA), Trystan Alford (Castle Graphics Rhema), Michael Mastnek (Reflex Solutions Forza), Gert Van Den Berg (BP Nantes Motors Rhema), Symm Grobler (Rhema) and Ben Pienaar (BJ Pro Welding Rhema).

A total of 34 drivers have signed on for the Speed and Sound 111 Sports and Saloon Car races.

Favourites to win should include André Needham (Ultra Gas Polo). Kobus Brits (Porsche 924), Dino Rolandi (BB Nissan Sentra), Johan Dreyer (Topwatch BMW E46), Vaughn Obhlidal (On Track Magazine Porsche 944), Chad ten Doeschate (TAR VW Golf), Andy Gossman (Chamdor Veridot Golf), Bruce Turner (Speed and Sound BMW E36) and Mark Ellis (Porsche 924).

Gavin Ross (Norbrake Polo) should lead the Comsol VW Challenge races, fighting the likes of Ian Prinsloo (VCX Polo), Etienne Prinsloo (Sasfin Polo), Rory Atkinson (Comsol Polo), Peet Visagie (VW Polo), James Hurley (Starter Pack Polo) and Iain Stevenson (Comsol Polo).

Not to be left out of the equation should be Henry van Vledder (Stufall Golf), Andre’ Needham (Eltra Gas Polo), Elna Croeser VW Polo), Deon Holliday (Snap On Polo), Darren Nathan (Sextrader Polo), Tyrell Govindsamy (Petroplast Polo) and Johan de Villiers (Electech Polo).

The motorcycle contingent are excited about the weekend, as the meeting will give most of them their only chance this season to compete at Killarney.

Stewart MacLeod (Red Star ZX10R) will be the man to catch in the Red Square Kawasaki Masters Cup events.

Chasing him will be people like Gavin Lightfoot (Elf Oils ZSX10R), Graeme van Breda (Van Breda ZX10R), Brian Bontekoning (Moyair ZX10R), Tony Klem (Frontier Diamond ZX10R), Robbie Breakspear (Kawasaki ZX10R), Pieter de Vos (Spada ZX10R) and André van Vollenstee (Stunt SA ZX10R).

The Thunderbike races should see Greg Gildenhuys (Kreepy Krauly BMW HP4) and Ryan Ottens (Northside BMW HP4) start as favourites, chased by Jesse Boshoff (Triumph Daytona) and Etienne Nelson (BMW 1000 RR). Othera to watch will be, Jannie Odendaal (Kawasaki ZX10), Darien Keyser (Uncle Andy Kawasaki ZX6), Teddy Brooke (Brooke Fridges ZX10R) and Riaan Fourie (Fourways Kawasak ZX10R).
