Brave man saves neighbour’s car from hijackers

The victim had screamed and caught the neighbour’s attention, who responded promptly.

The incident took place in Baobab Street, Van Dyk Park, on January 18, in the morning in East Rand, Boksburg Advertiser reports.

EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said the driver of the Benz was about to access his premises when three armed men driving in a similar Merc pulled up next to his.

The armed men got out of their car and hijacked him.

“After they sped away in the hijacked vehicle, being escorted by a getaway vehicle, the victim screamed, and that caught a neighbour’s attention, who responded promptly and chased the hijackers in his vehicle,” said Mokheseng.

Mokheseng alleged that there was an exchange of gunfire along the way.

“The stolen Merc was shot at, deflating a front right tyre. The hijackers then stopped the car, abandoned it and jumped into theirs before speeding off,” he said.

“The hijacked Mercedes came to a halt at the corner of Van Dyk and R554 near Carnival City, where our officers from Brakpan precinct assisted,” said Mokheseng.

Detectives from Brakpan police are investigating.

The Mercedes-Benz was towed to the Van Ryns Deep vehicle pound in Benoni.
