EFF leader Julius Malema said at a press conference on Friday that it was better for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to fight against President Jacob Zuma from within the ANC, instead of resigning.

Malema said it’s “more interesting” that a deputy president can challenge a sitting president. He said that Ramaphosa must not resign and complain from outside government, because if he does that, according to Malema, “some cunt” will say that’s he’s complaining because he’s disgruntled.

“We need them to come and fight in parliament … from an executive point of view. It carries more weight like that. Let’s say we succeed in persuading all of them, including the deputy president, and they come and vote in favour of the motion of no confidence against President Zuma,” said Malema at the party’s headquarters in Braamfontein.

“To disagree with Zuma from that platform is also more interesting. It makes it more powerful, and the message becomes more powerful when it comes from a deputy president. He is not disgruntled. He’s sitting there. He’s still got all the benefits and says ‘I’m not happy’.

“But if he resigns and speaks from outside, some cunt is going to say hayi, he’s talking now because he’s no longer a deputy president. No! He must talk from there.

“I was excited by the fact that the deputy president of the country is disagreeing with the president in public. But if he’s going to speak [from] there as Cyril? I won’t even listen to those things because he’s got his own problems. The deputy president … [if the] sitting deputy disagrees with the sitting president, it makes it more interesting and has a potential to galvanise a lot of South Africans … because he doesn’t speak from a disgruntled … so called disgruntled position.”

Ramaphosa had expressed his disapproval on the decision by Zuma to sack minister of finance Pravin Gordhan. Speaking to reporters in Bloemfontein, the deputy president said: “I raised my concerns and objection on the removal of the minister of finance … largely because he was being removed based on an intelligence report that I believe had unsubstantiated allegations about the minister and his deputy.”

President Jacob Zuma reshuffled his Cabinet – a move that saw five ministers sacked and five more reshuffled. They include the former ministers of agriculture, forestry and fisheries (Tina Joemat-Pettersson), transport (Dipuo Peters), tourism (Derek Hanekom), and public service and administration (Ngoako Ramatlhodi).

Malema also slammed the “cowardly” ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe for never sticking by any position.

He said speaking to “Gwede is a waste of time”.

He also said that the only person who would be able to save and unify the ANC and the country was Kgalema Motlanthe.
