Sex abuse scandal rocks Parktown Boys High

The department is unhappy with failure by the school to report the sexual assault allegations directly to it, as it only became aware of it through the media

The Gauteng department of education says it is concerned about the allegations of sex abuse at Parktown Boys High School, as reported in The Sunday Times.

“The department takes allegations of sex abuse in a very serious light and will launch our own investigation into the allegations,” the department’s spokesperson, Oupa Bodibe, said.

He said the matter was not formally reported to the department by the school. Instead, the department became aware only after the issue became public. The department is also unimpressed with failure by the school to report these serious allegations that it says “smacks of an attempt to sweep them under the carpet”.

Bodibe said the investigation would also seek to determine the reason why the school failed to report the incident and the extent of sex abuse at the school.

“Any educator found guilty of this nature of misconduct should be dismissed, as they betray the duty to protect children under their care,” Bodibe told the media.
