Home affairs DG Mkuseli Apleni to oppose suspension in court

The suspension was confirmed in a one-sentence statement released by the minister, but no further details were provided on the reasons for the suspension.

Home Affairs Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize on Monday announced that the department’s director-general Mkuseli Apleni had been placed on “precautionary suspension”.

No one appears to have any idea what the reasons for this are at this stage, including Apleni himself.

“The Home Affairs Minister, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize, announced that the department’s Director-General, Mr Mkuseli Apleni, has been placed on precautionary suspension as of today, 18 September 2017,” read a statement attributed to Mkhize’s spokesperson Mpume Madlala.

Apleni’s lawyer Sandile July confirmed they would oppose the move. July has said they are not sure what Apleni is being accused of.

The minister had provided vague reasons in a letter sent several days ago, he said.

“The minister has asked him to settle legal issues amicably in the department and that he has not called the meeting with the staff,” he was quoted as saying by EWN.

The minister did not elaborate even to Apleni on why she was doing what she’s doing.
