ANC will lose parly majority if NDZ emerges winner at conference, poll reveals

A survey by Rate Pop shows Cyril Ramaphosa is still the favourite to win among ANC members, according to a report.

Should Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma win the ANC presidential vote this weekend against the party’s deputy, Ramaphosa, then the ANC is likely to lose its parliamentary majority, Times LIVE reports.

A poll has revealed how among 6 000 people, Ramaphosa garnered 58.9% compared to Dlamini-Zuma’s 16%. The poll also revealed how 81% of party supporters would vote for Ramaphosa in 2019, with 50.9% of black DA voters stating they would support the ANC under Ramaphosa’s leadership, and 3.4% of EFF voters stating the same.

“With the ANC only having polled approximately 54% in the 2016 local government elections, the chance of ANC maintaining its parliamentary majority with Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma at the helm of the party is substantially reduced and realistically unlikely at this point,” said Rate Pop.

The ANC is heading towards its 54th elective conference at Nasrec this weekend. The conference is considered a defining moment for the party, as there are seven candidates contesting the presidency.

Should Dlamini-Zuma be elected, this will break the ANC’s age-old tradition of its deputy being the first preference for the position.
