Kimberley father gets 16 years in prison for 1998 rape

A 61-year-old man was sentenced to 16 years in jail after being convicted of sexual assault and rape. The sentence was handed down at the Galeshewe Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

The man sexually assaulted and raped his daughter in their Kagisho home, Kimberley, in 1998. His daughter was 15 years old at the time. She broke her silence last year and police arrested her father on 3 January.

He received four years for sexual assault and 12 years for raping a minor.

Police welcomed the sentence, saying investigating officer, Detective Aretha Claasen, had conducted a thorough investigation that led to the successful prosecution of a rapist during August Women’s Month.
