Three in ICU after man torches girlfriend’s car outside pre-school

The fire occurred when the man poured petrol over himself and the vehicle, before setting it alight.

Two women and a man were rushed to hospital after the man allegedly set himself and his girlfriend’s car alight, in an apparent domestic dispute outside a creche in Benoni on Monday.

“Gauteng police are investigating an attempted murder case following an incident that occurred outside a creche in Benoni today where a 27-year-old female was set alight allegedly by her boyfriend,” said police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza.

The fire occurred when the man poured petrol over himself and the vehicle before setting it alight.

The third woman injured during the incident is a friend of the girlfriend.

ER24 attended the scene, in Rynfield, Benoni, and found that the man sustained critical burn injuries, while the two women had suffered serious burn wounds.

The incident occurred after the woman had dropped her child at the pre-school.

ER24 said it is believed that the man poured petrol over the car with the mother still inside. The other woman was injured when she tried to pull her friend out of the vehicle.

The man, who is 40 years old, is under police guard at hospital, said Kweza. An additional charge of malicious damage to property will be added after the woman’s car was burnt.

Kweza said the motive is still under investigation.
