WATCH: Pointless crime or half-witted robbers who stink at stealing?

CCTV footage shows a pudgy-looking robber dressed in a blue jacket and umpire hat, clumsily plow through a small group of people standing near the Capitec ATM.

Two Free State robbers redefined the meaning of “pointless crime” after unsuccessfully trying to rob an ATM cash box at Twin City Mall in Heidedal, in Bloemfontein on Saturday morning.

CCTV footage shows a pudgy-looking robber dressed in a blue jacket, knee-length khaki shorts and an umpire hat, clumsily plow through a small group of people standing near the Capitec ATM.

A lone security guard had been wheeling the silver box, presumably stuffed with hard cash toward Capitec Bank, when the suspect made his move, shoving people aside.

He then pulls out a hand gun and the group quickly disperses upon realizing that a crime was in progress.

The security guard abandons the box at gun point and walks away, hands raised in surrender.

The robber proceeds to fire a few more pointless shots in the air, while lazily strolling across the walkway, despite clearing the scene moments earlier.

Another suspect in a yellow reflector vest then makes his way towards the witless wonder in blue and inspects the box.

But the cowboy-styled thief who wasn’t quite done with his weapon unleashes more gun fire on the steel box.

Smoke begins to rise from the box, before the umpire hat-clad thief decided to give the stubborn box a few knocks. But the steel box, almost in defense of itself, mysteriously jumps up, causing the suspects to reel back in fright.

The hare-brained robbers apparently then decided it was best to abandon the self-defending cash box and fled the scene.

Hawks Captain Christopher Singo confirmed to The Citizen that no one was wounded and no arrests have been made yet.
