A 20-year-old man was hijacked at gunpoint in Merebank, KwaZulu-Natal last week, reports Rising Sun Chatsworth.
The man, who did not want to named as he fears for his safety, says he was hijacked when he went to buy bread and milk at a local shop.

“I was placing the bread and milk in the back seat of the car when a man came from behind and manhandled me. The next thing I was on the floor. I instantly started saying my prayers out loud. There were at least six men surrounding me and they were all armed,” he said.
The hijackers forced him into the back seat of the car. Fortunately, as they were reversing, he managed to escape.
“After I escaped, the shop owner opened the door for me and I called my family to let them know what had happened. I also called the police,” he said.
The young man believes that the hijackers were professionals as they were all armed. He advised people to co-operate in such situations so that they do not get harmed. He strongly believes that his prayers and good deeds saved him.
Community leader and activist Yusuf Vawda said, “This is the second hijacking incident which occurred in the last seven days. Crime is definitely spiraling out of control. Community members need to be more vigilant. We are, however, very impressed and thankful that the community stood together and attended the crime scene rendering assistance to those affected.”
