A teacher who slapped a pupil at the Sans Souci High School in Cape Town in February has been allowed to return to her post at the beginning of the second term in April.
Both Clarisa Venter and the pupil were suspended from the school following footage showing the two in a confrontation that led to the teacher slapping the pupil. The video trended on social media showing the pupil and teacher in a heated argument.
Venter and the Grade 9 pupil were both suspended after a video showed them in an altercation in a full classroom in February.
Education MEC spokesperson Jessica Shelver told EWN that the school’s governing body reached a decision that the teacher should receive a fine,a final written warning and had to undergo anger management sessions.
She said the mother of the Grade 9 pupil removed her child from the school before a disciplinary hearing could start.
Both the teacher and pupil have lodged cases against each other, with Venter set to appear in court on a charge of assault in April. The 16-year-old pupil will also face an assault charge.
