Final election results live: Coalitions imminent with 66 hung municipalities

Joburg is the country's latest hung municipality, as figures finally came in for the country's biggest Metro.


The election results are out. Although the ANC won 161 municipalities, there are 66 municipalities with hung councils.

This means parties will have to form governing coalitions.

The final election results are as follows:

  • ANC – 46%
  • DA – 22%
  • EFF – 10%
  • IFP – 6%
  • FF+ – 2%
  • ActionSA – 2%

Coalition negotiations

Parties will now have to put aside their differences and negotiate coalitions.

The next few days are sure to see plenty of horse trading as parties try to secure coalitions.

In Gauteng alone, the ANC failed to secure outright majorities in nine of the province’s 11 municipalities, including the three Metros of Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.

Remarkably though, the party has boosted its share of the Limpopo vote to 60.8%.

Kingmaker ActionSA’s Mashaba vows to clean up Joburg

Everyone wants to take Herman Mashaba to the municipal ball, but the ActionSA leader is still playing hard to get as he angles for the mayor’s chain which will enable him to root out corruption in the City of Joburg.
