GALLERY: ANC’s ‘revolutionary’ cakes

The ANC cakes spectacularly, albeit momentarily, stole the limelight from the state capture inquiry debates, the NEC meeting starting today and university walk-ins. Amandla!

African National Congress, the continent’s oldest liberation movement, celebrated its 106th birthday on Monday, January 8, 2018, in East London.

On this historic occasion, particularly during the struggle days, the ANC distributed its “January 8th Statement” using underground channels. The statement typically unpacked the party’s programme of action for the year.

With the advent of democracy and the movement transitioning to a ruling party, the January 8th statement has become the party’s key policy announcement speech delivered, as been in the past, by the party’s president.

The January 8th statement has also turned into a key indicator of what might be included in the state of the nation address. This has left many analysts wondering if this week’s national executive committee (NEC) being held in East London will resolve to recall Jacob Zuma as the party’s president to circumvent the “two centres of power”.

This was not the only thing that preoccupied South Africans this week. As soon as images of the various cakes depicting party colours were shared on social media platforms, many were left asking: “Who baked these cakes?”

Among pictures shared was one what looked like three asymmetrical bricks draped in ANC colours, which some claimed symbolised the centre not holding. Northern Cape Premier Sylvia Lucas was also thought to have been asking what exactly she was expected to do with the monstrous cake in front of her.

That was just the beginning of the cake troubles, as it was also suggested that when cut into pieces, the cakes simply fell apart like a house of cards.

In the absence of a cake, muffins in ANC colours were lined up to spell out the movement’s age.
