On Monday, January 22, the new chief of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, David Tembe, launched Operation Nomakanjani in the Joburg CBD, City Buzz reports. The operation consisted of all the City of Joburg departments and entities.
Nomakanjani means “by any means necessary”.

By all accounts, the operation, which aims to clean up the city and get citizens to comply with the City’s bylaws, was a huge success.

In a statement released by the Metro Police Department, it is reported that about 20 unroadworthy taxis were impounded for not having the necessary documentation.
An illegal electricity connection was also uncovered and disconnected at a building in Rahima Moosa Street, while five truckloads full of street traders’ goods were confiscated for contravening the City’s by-laws in Rahima Moosa and Harrison streets.

The fees for retrieving impounded goods is R2 815 for vehicles and nonperishable goods and R1 425 for perishable goods.
The department said Operation Nomakanjani will be undertaken three times a week.
