Mayor of cash-strapped municipality accused of stealing municipal cattle

A municipal truck was seen picking up cattle belonging to the council.

Under the alleged instruction of the mayor of Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, Lindiwe Gunuza-Nkwentsha, a herd of cattle was loaded and taken to her home in Tarkastad, where they were slaughtered for a traditional ceremony.

According to Dispatch LIVE, the incident was seen by witnesses who reported it to opposition party, the EFF. A protest was then staged at a council meeting and EFF leader in that municipality, Luthando Amos confirmed this.

“The ANC-led council opted to institute an internal investigation, which will take a long time to get to the bottom of.

“We view this as gross misuse of power by the mayor because not only did she misuse a municipal truck for her personal use, but allegedly stole from the pound,” said Amos.

When contacted for comment, Gunuza-Nkwentsha would neither deny or confirm a ceremony happened at her home.

The regional leadership of the ANC is also looking into the matter.
