One dead, 11 injured as bakkie rolls down 100m embankment in Pietermaritzburg

At the time of their arrival, ER24 paramedics found 10 people who sustained minor injuries climbing up the embankment, ER24 spokeswoman Annine Dormehl said on Sunday.

One person was killed and 11 others were injured when a bakkie rolled down a 100 metre embankment on the N3 between Lions River and Tweedie in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night, paramedics said.

At the time of their arrival, ER24 paramedics found 10 people who sustained minor injuries climbing up the embankment, ER24 spokeswoman Annine Dormehl said on Sunday.

“One person sustained serious injuries and was found at the bottom of the valley with a possible spine fracture and it was decided to use rope rescue techniques to get the patient to the top of the bank.

“With the help of various services the patient was rescued and transported to Grey’s Hospital. The other patients were transported to nearby hospitals in the area. It is believed that heavy mist and rain could have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle,” Dormehl said.
