Pretoria chief magistrate Desmond Nair to comment on Bosasa allegations

The Magistrates' Commission says Nair will be given the opportunity to respond with comment on the allegations Bosasa paid for security upgrades at his home.

Pretoria chief magistrate Desmond Nair, who presided over the bail application of former athlete Oscar Pistorius, will be given the opportunity by the Magistrates’ Commission to respond with comment on allegations that Bosasa allegedly did security upgrades at his home to the value of R200,000.

This comes after Richard Le Roux, an employee of a Bosasa subsidiary, GTS (formerly known as Sondolo IT), told the commission of inquiry into state capture on Thursday that the company’s special projects team did maintenance work on the properties of high-ranking officials.

These allegedly included Nair, Minister of Environmental Affairs Nomvula Mokonyane, Minister of Mineral Resources Gwede Mantashe, former SAA chair Dudu Myeni, former department of correctional services commissioner Linda Mti and MP Vincent Smith, among others.

At Nair’s property, the team installed an electric fence, an IP CCTV system and an alarm system, Le Roux told the commission.

News24 reports the Magistrates’ Commission has said Nair will be given the opportunity to respond with comment on the allegations. It was further reported the commission confirmed that the allegations were discussed at its ethics committee meeting on Friday.

The committee reportedly took the decision that these allegations should be on the commission’s agenda at its upcoming meeting on February 22.

When Nair was reached for comment, he said he had referred the matter to his legal representative, Ulrich Roux, to follow due legal process.
