WATCH: Massive gas tanker explosion in Boksburg leaves several dead, many injured

A gas tanker reportedly exploded outside the OR Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg.


A massive explosion occurred in Boksburg, Gauteng, on Saturday morning after a gas truck was reportedly involved in an accident.

Kyle van Reenen, Emer-G-Med spokesperson, said several people have died, with many more critically injured.

The explosion happened on Hospital Road, a few metres from Tambo Memorial Hospital, when the tanker drove into a low-lying bridge.

The truck was carrying LP Gas.

The Tambo Memorial Hospital was damaged, with patients scrambling to safety.

Three or four cars are also said to have been involved in the accident.

Videos and photos shared on social media show bodies lying on the ground and severely burnt people trying to get medical help.

Paramedics and multiple emergency service agencies are currently at the scene on Railway Street in Boksburg.

“At this stage we can confirm there have been multiple people left with critical injuries and several fatalities,” said Kyle van Reenen, Emer-G-Med spokesperson.
