The Johannesburg municipality will be conducting water and electricity meter verification throughout May.
The city said the verification drive aims to improve revenue generation and billing optimisation by ensuring residents receive accurate readings from meters correctly matched to their accounts.
Verification work will be done in four groups, with the city urging residents to be aware of the technicians in their residential areas.
The city has appointed Omnitell Tech as a service provider to verify electricity and water meters.
Each group will be completed in a single week, starting on 5 May and ending on 30 May.
Meter readers will work from 8 am to 5pm daily.
The City of Johannesburg’s Director for Communications and Stakeholder Engagement for Group Finance, Kgamanyane Maphologela, believes the drive will aid service delivery.
“The project will also go a long way to ensure that the city responds to customers’ complaints that they receive estimated readings. Full cooperation from our customers will ensure that the project succeeds.”
The spokesperson requested residents to allow meter readers access to their properties so that they can complete their work.
“This is important as it will allow the City to use accurate meter readings obtained at the properties to have a true reflection of the customer’s consumption,” Maphologela explained.
Meter reading and verification will be conducted in the following areas during these weeks:
Week 5 – 9 May 2025
Week 12 – 16 May 2025
Week 19 – 23 May 2025
Week 26 – 30 May 2025
To verify the meter readers, teams will always display approved IDS with the agents’ full names and ID numbers and travel in branded vehicles.
Customers can verify the authenticity of the meter readers or submit queries via the city’s call centre on 0860 562874 or using the WhatsApp number 083 314 9640 to speak to a chatbot.
