Weather alert: Cold, wet and stormy conditions for Workers’ Day

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has released its latest weather forecast for Workers’ Day, Thursday, 1 May 2025.

Severe thunderstorms and hail are expected across four provinces on Workers’ Day, with warnings for strong winds, dangerous sea conditions along the coast, and icy conditions in the Northern Cape and Western Cape until Friday. Here’s what you need to know.

Weather warnings, Thursday, 1 May

Impact-based warnings

The weather service has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms leading to large amounts of small hail over an open area, as well as localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges that are expected over the eastern parts of the North West, extreme eastern parts of the Free State, Gauteng, and the south and central parts of Mpumalanga.

The weather service also issued a yellow level warning for damaging winds and waves, resulting in difficulty in navigation, small vessels taking on water, and capsising within the locality expected along the coast between Plettenberg Bay and Port Edward.

Damaging waves resulting in difficulty in navigation at sea and small vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing are also expected between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay on Thursday and Friday. A yellow level 2 warning was issued.

Advisories

Until Friday, very cold, wet, and windy conditions are expected over the southern Namakwa District of the Northern Cape, Cape Winelands, and Central and Little Karoo municipalities of the Western Cape.

Provincial weather forecast

Here’s what to expect in your province on Worker’s Day, 1 May:

Gauteng:

Residents of Gauteng can expect cloudy weather in the south; otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.

The region’s expected UVB sunburn index is “high”.

Residents should take the necessary precautions against prolonged sun exposure.

Mpumalanga:

Mpumalanga residents can expect cloudy conditions in the south; otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers except in the Lowveld.

Limpopo:

The day will start with morning fog patches in the southwest; otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the south and south-western parts.

North West:

Morning fog patches await North West residents in places; otherwise, it will be partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the east.

Free State:

Residents of the Free State will experience morning fog patches over the eastern parts; otherwise, it will be partly cloudy windy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers over the eastern and central parts.

Northern Cape:

The day will be fine in the extreme northwest; otherwise, it will be partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm but cold to very cold in the southwest, with light rain from the afternoon where it will be cloudy.

Western Cape:

Western Cape residents can expect fine weather over the eastern parts in the morning; otherwise, conditions will be cloudy and cold with isolated showers and rain but scattered in the south and southwest.

Eastern Cape (western half):

It will be cloudy and cold with isolated showers and rain but cool along the coast.

Eastern Cape (eastern half):

The day will be windy and cold in places; otherwise, it will be cloudy and cool with isolated showers and rain in places south of the escarpment, becoming partly cloudy in the north in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal:

Residents of KwaZulu-Natal can look forward to cloudy weather in the east with morning and evening fog in places over the central interior; otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and cool to warm but cold in places in the extreme south. Isolated showers and rain are expected.
