Level 2 warning for damaging waves in parts of Western Cape

Extremely high fire danger conditions are also expected over !Kheis, Siyathemba and Ubuntu Local Municipalitis of the Northern Cape.


The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for damaging waves between Saldanha Bay and Cape Agulhas on Thursday.

This will result in difficulty in navigation at sea.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are also expected over !Kheis, Siyathemba and Ubuntu Local Municipalitis of the Northern Cape.

“Conditions are such that the FDI index is above 75. Under these conditions, fires may develop and spread rapidly, resulting in damage to property and possible loss of human or animal life,” warned the weather service.

The weather service has further warned of an intense cut-off low pressure system that is expected to affect the Western, Northern and Eastern Cape provinces from Friday to Sunday.

“The public and small stock farmers are advised that very cold and wet conditions with light snowfalls on the mountain peaks, strong winds and rough seas can be expected. Heavy rain could result in localised flooding in places along the coast and adjacent interior,” warned the weather service.

Thursday’s weather forecast

Gauteng: Fine and cool but warm in places in the north. The expected UVB sunburn index: very high.

Mpumalanga: Morning fog on the Highveld, otherwise fine and cool to warm, but partly cloudy in the east

Limpopo: Partly cloudy and cool to warm weather.

North West: Fine and cool to warm weather.

Free State: Fine and cool weather.

Northern Cape: Partly cloudy in the west with morning fog patches, otherwise fine and cool to warm. The wind along the coast will be light and variable, becoming moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly from the afternoon, reaching strong towards the evening.

Western Cape: Fine to partly cloudy over the eastern parts in the morning, otherwise cloudy and cold to cool with isolated to scattered showers over the south-western parts spreading to the southern parts by the afternoon. Morning fog expected along the west coast.

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate northwesterly north of Cape Columbine becoming fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly from the afternoon, otherwise fresh to strong westerly to north-westerly becoming strong southerly to south-westerly from the afternoon, but southeasterly between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas from the evening.

The expected UVB sunburn index: low.

Western half of the Eastern Cape: Fine weather at first, otherwise partly cloudy and warm, but cool in the south. It will become cloudy with isolated showers and rain along the coast and adjacent interior from the afternoon.

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate northwesterly at first, otherwise fresh to strong south-westerly.

Eastern half of the Eastern Cape: Cool weather in places in the north, otherwise fine and warm, becoming cloudy south of the escarpment from the afternoon. Isolated showers and rain are expected in the south-west from the evening.

The wind along the coast will be light north-westerly, becoming moderate to fresh south-westerly from late morning.

KwaZulu-Natal: Morning fog in places over the interior, otherwise fine and warm. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh northeasterly, becoming south-westerly south of Durban from the late afternoon. The expected UVB sunburn index: high.
