“I saw a black car behind me, putting pressure on me to drive faster,” she said.

She said she moved her vehicle into the left lane to make space for the car to pass, but to her surprise, the car followed her to the left lane.

Listening and singing along to gospel music, Sherley was unaware of the chaos that would follow.

Bullets riddled her car while she was driving.

“I did not even notice anything suspicious; I was singing and praising God when all of a sudden I heard ‘bang bang’ all around me.”

Initially, she thought the shooting was outside the car but then her windows shattered.

She ducked and swerved as bullets pierced through her car, fortunately managing to keep the car under control.

The black vehicle then sped past her.

“The Lord made sure that those bullets hit the hardest parts of my car and I made it out alive,” she said.

Van Niekerk, who resides in Midrand, believed the shooting could be mistaken for an attempted hijacking, although she suspects it was a hit that is related to her line of work.

She works as a financial manager for a municipality in the West Rand.

“Someone wanted me dead and maybe it was work-related.”

She said she was known as a professional and strict person in her line of work.

“Maybe they wanted to kill me so someone corrupt can take my place.”

Even though Van Niekerk did not sustain any injuries, she had suffered trauma for which she would seek counselling.

The matter was reported to the Garsfontein police station, and has since been handed over to the Diepsloot police. A case of attempted murder will be investigated.

“When you look at my car and all the bullets that went through, you wonder how I survived,” she said.
