The weather service has issued an alert for extremely high fire danger conditions on Monday. These conditions are expected in the Richtersveld, Nama Khoi and Kemiesberg local municipalities in the Northern Cape, and the Breede Valley and Laingsburg local municipalities in the Western Cape. SANDF says withdrawal from DRC has started, but it’s ‘not a sign of weakness’
Defence Minister Angie Motshekga on Sunday said the withdrawal of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) troops from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has begun.
She said the withdrawal comes as the region has seen “renewed momentum” towards achieving peace in the past four months. Despite the withdrawal of its soldiers, Motshekga said, “South Africa remains committed to a peaceful, stable and prosperous DRC”.

ANC MPs tell Mbalula to ditch DA in hostile meeting – reports
ANC MPs at a meeting on Friday urged the party’s leadership to remove the DA from the government of national unity (GNU).
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula reportedly called the meeting to discuss the new budget that will be presented in parliament on 21 May. The meeting, however, became tense when MPs brought up the DA’s refusal to back the previous two versions of the budget.

Mbeki accused of trying to save his reputation by intervening in apartheid lawsuit – report
The son of a former anti-apartheid activist has accused former president Thabo Mbeki of trying to “shield his reputation” by intervening in a lawsuit against the government for failing to investigate and prosecute crimes committed during apartheid.
The families of apartheid victims have accused the government of interfering in the investigation or prosecution of apartheid-era crimes referred by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

15 killed, five injured in head-on crash in Eastern Cape
At least 15 people have died and five others sustained injuries in a head-on collision involving a fully loaded minibus taxi and a bakkie in the Eastern Cape.
The accident occurred on the R63 road between Adelaide and Maqoma (Fort Beaufort) at about midnight on Saturday. Eastern Cape provincial transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the cause of the accident is being investigated.

Armed robbery suspect killed in shoot-out with police in Eastern Cape
A man suspected of being involved in an armed robbery was killed during a shootout with police in Madeira, Eastern Cape, on Saturday afternoon.
The shootout occurred after police officers came across a robbery while on their way to Mthatha. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said the members of the Saps tactical response team reacted after seeing three armed men robbing a pedestrian on the roadside.
