TV personality and choreographer Somizi Mhlongo posted a video on Instagram saying when, and if, he dies, his followers must create a funeral WhatsApp group and hide it from poet Mzwakhe Mbuli because he would not want him at his funeral.
“I am asking you please, if I die, when I die, that’s if I die, please open a WhatsApp group and hide it from Mzwakhe Mbuli. I do not want him at my funeral,” Somizi says in the video.
Somizi was reacting to reports that Mbuli is a funeral scammer who allegedly leeches off celebrity deaths and seeks to make money off them.
The accusations emerged in the wake of jazz musician Ray Phiri’s passing yesterday. Mbuli was accused of trying to steal money from the estate after he was announced as the spokesperson for Phiri’s funeral.
Thabiso Mosia, who knew late kwaito star Mandoza, said Mbuli and his ‘legends ’attended two family meetings with Mandoza’s family and tried to steal every penny.
Mosia said although he was “saddened” by Phiri’s death, what was worse about the news was that Mbuli was already giving interviews. He claimed the poet was only there to “steal money”.
“With all due respect to the family. Mzwakhe might be a family friend. But trust me, now he’s there to steal. He has no good intentions at all.”
Mbuli responded to the scam allegations in an interview with SABC news, describing them as malicious. When The Citizen contacted Mbuli, he denied everything, saying he was being helpful and had tried to mobilise artists to assist each other.
