While presenting the Best Picture award at the 2019 Oscars, host of The Daily Show Trevor Noah thrilled South African viewers across the world with a joke in his mother’s home language, isiXhosa.
In reference to the now popular Black Panther catch phrase, “Wakanda forever,” Noah jokingly said a phrase in Xhosa before attributing a false English translation to it.
“Growing up as young boy in Wakanda, I would see King T’Challa flying over our village and he would remind me of a great Xhosa phrase: ‘abelungu abazi uba ndiyaxoka’, which means ‘in times like these, we are stronger when we fight together than when we try to fight apart,'” said Noah.
What the phrase actually means, however, is “the white people don’t know I’m lying”.
As such, Twitter users inspired by Noah took to Twitter with their own hilarious interpretations.
