Two suspected cash-in-transit robbers killed in police shootout

The men were linked with at least six armed cash-in-transit robberies since June 2022, including one in KwaDukuza.

Two suspected cash-in-transit robbers were shot and killed by police in Wasbank, near Ladysmith, yesterday afternoon (May 22).

The men had been tracked in connection with at least six armed robberies between June 2022 and March 2025, including one in KwaDukuza.

Further alleged robberies took place in Verulam, Nyoni, Greytown, Phoenix and Langlaagte.

“Our members identified the house where the suspects were hiding. When police introduced themselves, the suspects opened fire, and a shootout followed,” said provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

“Both suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange. No police officer was injured during the operation.”

One of the suspects, aged 43, was separately wanted for possession of explosives and ammunition and two firearms were recovered from the scene.

Cash-in-transit robberies have recently become a worrying issue on the North Coast, with at least six separate robberies taking place in roughly the last year.

Since March 2024, there have been armed cash-in-transit robberies in Kranskop, Hazelmere, Mandeni, Mandeni again, KwaDukuza and Mandeni for a third time.
