Ballito resident Dan Pillay is taking his love for puzzles beyond the morning newspaper and a cup of coffee.
Pillay, an avid puzzler, is patenting a new crossword game he hopes will take the public by storm.
The idea popped into his head while playing the wildly popular Japanese puzzle, Sudoku.
“Sudoku is great but not everybody is able to understand it. I wanted to create something everyone can play, from a child to a grandparent,” said Dan.
Dan’s master plan took root at 1am in the morning, when he woke his entire family and drove to Pretoria.
A seven-hour queue in the patents office followed, so Dan could get his puzzle copyrighted.
The puzzle works similar to Sudoku: a grid with scrambled letters is the starting point, with a line of the missing letters at the bottom.
The aim is to unscramble the word using general knowledge.
“The applications are wide – you can play with towns, sport, plants, animals, anything. I want to publish books of puzzles.”
Dan will start with a collection of Biblical puzzles, which he hopes to have published by the end of October.
