Ballito’s world champ line dancer

The champion dancer gets inspiration from her mother who danced until the age of 81-years-old.

Showing that age is merely a number, 52-year-old, Donna Siebbles wooed the judges when she represented South Africa at the world dance masters championship in the United Kingdom early this month. The talented line dancer competed against 15 countries and won the world championship in the 45-60 division.

Siebbles, a vibrant Ballito resident, began her journey in line dance eight years ago when her mother persuaded her to join a dance class in Ballito as a way to pass time and keep fit.

She never imagined that she would one day compete in competitions, let alone the world championships.

“I used to dance in school but it was not serious. I took a liking to line dancing and I moved from the dance studio in Ballito to Solo Rhythm Dance Studio in Westville under the instruction of Serena Rajkumar who herself has won titles at World Championships, ” she said.

When Siebbles decided this would be the year she would compete in competitions, she set her goals high and aimed for the the world dance masters championships but before she could take off she first had to compete in the dance championships held in Johannesburg and Cape Town to qualify for the UK.

“I competed in Johannesburg and won and then competed at the South African masters in Cape Town and won. I became the SA champion in the newcomer silver division. This qualified me to represent South Africa at the world dance masters championship in the UK,” Siebbles.

The champion dancer gets inspiration from her mother who danced until the age of 81-years-old. Siebbles said dancing is hard work and requires dedication. She also advised that more people try out line dancing.

“Many people think that line dancing is country dancing but it is actually ‘solo dancing’. You do ballroom, the cha-cha, the waltze and so on – you just do it without a partner.”
