THE South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has announced that tariffs for tollgates on the national roads will be adjusted on 24 May 2014, in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

However, the toll tariffs on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) that came into operation in December 2013, will not be adjusted this time.

The adjustments, which occur annually, will become effective on 24 May.

The tariffs have been approved by the Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters and were gazetted on Friday. The average CPI adjustment for SANRAL toll tariffs is 5.8%.

There will be adjustments on the N3 toll road between Johannesburg and Durban and on the N4 highway between the Mozambican border and the Botswana border, as well as on the toll road sections of the N1, N2, N17 and R30.

There will be no increase on the Swartruggens toll plaza.

“We use the inflation rate as a guide, as we at the national roads agency do not want to increase road usage costs beyond what is reasonable,” said Vusi Mona, communications manager at SANRAL.

“E-toll tariffs in Gauteng became effective in the beginning of December 2013 and therefore the first annual adjustment may only be in March 2015,” he said.
