Holidaymaker robbed at gunpoint at uMhlanga Nature Reserve

Police warn residents not to walk through the reserve alone as armed man may still be on the loose.

A LEISURELY stroll through the uMhlanga Nature Reserve turned into a nightmare for a holidaymaker after he was robbed of his valuables at gunpoint. The incident on Friday, 3 October occurred at about 5pm. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the man had only started his walk, when a man ran up to him and pressed something sharp into his back.

“The suspect told the resident he had a gun and to keep his head facing away from him. He then began to riffle through his pockets and took his wallet with bank cards, R700 in cash, a cell phone and a Rossi 38.special handgun with five rounds and the gun holster. The suspect then threatened to shoot the man if he moved.

“The holidaymaker remembers hearing someone running through the dense undergrowth of the reserve. Though this is an isolated incident, I urge residents to walk in groups whenever possible,” Deokaran said.

There have been no arrests as yet.
