Avril Hobbs, who manages the Leos, said during this process the youth were inspired to join the event as volunteers and so began the start of the youth club.
“Currently the Leos are in launch mode, and have several team members as we are a project of North Durban Lions to focus on youth and develop community engagement. The purpose of the club is to offer leadership, experience and opportunities. It also provides the opportunity for the youth to serve their community and have fun while doing it, creating relationships and forging friendships on the basis of making our world a better place,” she said.
Some of the skills taught include leadership, communication, teamwork, self-confidence, accountability, integrity, people skills, organisational skills and the art of delegation and delivering. There are also opportunities for the Leos to travel abroad.
“Being part of a global movement of youths around the world, there is an annual International Convention, and an All Africa Forum. These gatherings bring different Leos together to build greater bonds and programmes, where the core is to learn to lead and work with different peers and uplift the community. We also plan events focused on different experiences to develop cultural and community engagement while having fun,” added Hobbs.
One of the North Durban Young Leos is Lyla Mia Appasamy, who is in matric at Crawford La Lucia who became motivated to join the club after working with her uncle, Sam Reddy, on a community project where the North Durban Lions Club were also involved.

“For me, it’s always been about giving back. I’ve seen first hand how tough life can be for some people, and I wanted to find a way to do more than just talk about it. The Leos felt like the perfect fit — good people coming together to actually do something. I am the first member of the newly formed Leos, and we are looking for others to join in,” she said.
“What really drew me in was how hands-on it all is. It’s not about sitting around in meetings; it’s about getting out there and making things happen. Events like the Durban North Community Kids Fun Day are proof of that. It’s amazing to see what we can achieve when people come together with a shared purpose,” she added.
Lyla said the Leos is helping her achieve her goals for service and by joining, you can also use these hours as part of community service at school. She encouraged those between the ages of 12 and 18 to join.
“Joining the Leos will be an educational experience for you but at the same time you can have fun and make new friendships,” said Lyla.
