Inquest docket opened following recovery of man’s body in uMdloti

The man is believed to be in his 30s and it is unclear how the body ended up in the water.

AN inquest docket has been opened by the Durban North police station following the recovery of a man’s body at uMdloti Beach on Wednesday afternoon (December 11).

According to Durban North SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Nonhlanhla Shozi, the man, believed to be in his 30s, was spotted by anglers who saw his body floating in the water.

This was the second body recovered on the KZN north coast after that of another man had washed up on Westbrook Beach on the same day.

It is unclear whether the incidents are related or how their bodies ended up in the water.

IPSS Search & Rescue, who also responded to both scenes, confirmed that members of the SAPS Search & Rescue and Durban Metro Police Search & Rescue responded to both scenes.

“The IPSS Search & Rescue jetski was launched, and members were able to recover the body of a man in uMdloti. During the recovery, IPSS Tongaat responded to reports of a second body, also of a man, which had washed up on Westbrook beach. The bodies of both men have been handed over to local SAPS for further investigation. Our condolences go out to the friends and family of the deceased,” they said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Lifesaving South Africa said there had been nine drownings nationally (two of which occurred in uMhlanga) during the second week of December.

They called for holidaymakers and residents to only swim at beaches where lifeguards are on duty and to avoid swimming at unprotected beaches.
