Teenagers detained after uMhlanga Beach backpack theft

The victims declined to open a case following the successful recovery of the stolen items.

TWO suspects, aged 14 and 18, were detained following the theft of a backpack on uMhlanga Beach on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite two suspects being identified, the victims declined to open a case, marking the second such occasion following a similar incident two weeks ago.

According to Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell, the incident occurred at about 13:00.

“Our area manager was patrolling the uMhlanga Promenade when a lifeguard and a young male approached him to report a theft. The victim explained that he and two friends had left their backpack, containing three smartphones and a wallet, behind the lifeguard tower while swimming. When they returned, they discovered the backpack was missing.

“A detailed description of two male suspects was given and a search was conducted. Within 20 minutes, the suspects were spotted. One suspect was apprehended while the second suspect fled into a nearby resort but was apprehended a short while later. After investigations the stolen backpack containing the three smartphones and the wallet which was discarded in a nearby bush were recovered,” he said.

Powell urged residents and visitors to report crimes and open cases to help combat criminal activity effectively.
