Durban North SAPS welcome life sentence in stabbing case

The conviction is related to a brutal stabbing attack in 2023 in La Lucia Ridge.

THE management of the Durban North SAPS station has commended one of its detectives, Warrant Officer Naven Moodley, for securing a lengthy conviction of a 40-year-old man who brutally stabbed a woman in an attack in La Lucia Ridge in 2023.

Khanysani Ngema was handed down the 25-year sentence at the Durban Magistrate’s Court after he was convicted of assault with grievous bodily harm (GBH).

Ngema stabbed the victim, who was known to him, 12 times and then allegedly tried to poison himself.

Due to his recovery time in hospital following the incident, he was charged in abstentia.

Spokesperson for the police station, Sergeant Nonhlanhla Shozi, highlighted the good conviction, saying Ngema was now serving time at Westville Prison.

“Warrant Officer Moodley strongly opposed bail for the accused during court proceedings. The station commander, detective branch commander and the management at the station commends the detective for his sterling work in this case. This is a tremendous success for the station and we are extremely proud of him,” Shozi said.

Ngema’s conviction comes at a time when the SAPS, as part of Operation Shanela, arrested 1794 suspects for assault with GBH nationally.
