Ward 110 by-election: IEC investigates alleged voter registration irregularity
The objection was raised by the ANC.
THE KZN provincial spokesperson for the Electoral Commission (IEC), Thabani Ngwira, has confirmed that it is investigating claims of irregular voter registration following the recent Ward 110 by-elections.
This comes after the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) won a by-election for Ward 110 by just 22 votes over the DA last week.
The ward, previously held by the DA since 2021, includes Mount Moriah, Mount Royal, Rainham, Sunningdale, Glen Anil and a section of Glen Hills.

Ngwira said the electoral commission had received a formal objection from the ANC over what it called ‘voter registration irregularities’.
“I can confirm the matter is being investigated. We did receive a formal objection by the ANC claiming that there were cases of people on the voters’ roll who don’t reside in the ward. We will make a formal comment once the investigation is complete,” he said.
While the results of that investigation are yet to be concluded, the results of the by-elections were published on the IEC website showing the breakdown of votes and the number of voters who cast their ballots at each voting station.

MK accounted for 2 435 votes while the DA accounted for 2 413 and the ANC came in third with just 966 votes.
The Ward 110 by-election was triggered earlier this year following the dismissal of former DA councillor Aamir Abdul.
In all, the ward was contested by six political party candidates and one Independent Candidate.
