At around 09:45 on Friday, August 8, a Marshall Security armed response officer on routine patrol along Riverside Road in Umgeni Park noticed a man carrying what appeared to be an electrical or fibre-optic cable.

The officer’s suspicions were heightened by the man’s behaviour and the presence of open holes along the roadway, resembling incomplete infrastructure works.

“The suspect was unable to provide a reasonable explanation for the cable, which officers believed had been stolen from a nearby worksite. He was apprehended at the scene and handed over to Greenwood Park SAPS, along with the recovered cable,” said Marshall Security spokesperson, Tyron Powell.

Earlier that morning, Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team (SOT) responded to a report on a community crime alert group that copper taps had been stolen from a property on Columbia Road. The suspect fled on foot towards Queen Nandi Drive.

Officers tracked down a man matching the suspect’s description at the intersection of Kew Road and Queen Nandi Drive. A search revealed the stolen taps in his possession. He was arrested and taken to Greenwood Park SAPS, where the property owner confirmed she would lay charges.
